The self-assessment grid is based on the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which was devised by the European Council and is now the reference in language teaching in Europe.

The 6 levels of the downloadable are used to divide learners into 3 broad categories:

• basic user (A1 and A2)
• independent user (B1 and B2)
• proficient user (C1 and C2)
